Cristobalite is identified as a predominant phase in Ca-doped hydroxyapatite (HAp), which may cause some adverse effects on biocompatibility. Eu3+ doped HAp was synthesized by a wet chemical method. X-ray diffraction was employed to characterize the crystalline phase, which was confirmed as a nanocrystalline HAp consisting of the orthorhombic phase and cristobalite. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve indicated that the phase transition of HAp occurred at about 600 degrees C, which is well consistent with that in the literature. The Eu3+ doped hydroxyapatite crystallized with the orthorhombic Ca10Eu3(PO4)6(OH)2 showed an emission peak at 615 nm. The DSC result showed that there were two phase transitions at approximately 190 and 450 degrees C. In addition, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that Eu3+ was doped into the apatite lattice, and the doping ratio increased with the decreasing Ca content. The fluorescence spectra indicated that the characteristic emission peak of Eu3+ at 615 nm was red-shifted after the phase transition at about 190 degrees C. The mechanochemical reaction of Eu3+ doped hydroxyapatite with HNO3 solution was investigated. The results suggested that Eu3+ doped hydroxyapatite could be dissolved by HNO3 solution at different pH values. The change in the luminescence properties of Eu3+ was ascribed to the modification of the structural and electronic configurations of the dopant.Predictors of glottis closure in emergent endotracheal intubation.
